BIER Releases “A Practical Perspective on Water Accounting in the Beverage Sector”
A Practical Perspective on Water Accounting in the Beverage Sector was developed through a collaborative effort of BIER members for the purpose of achieving consistency in water accounting specifically for the beverage industry. This Sector Perspective provides beverage industry specific information and examples that improve the ability to measure and account for water withdrawal, consumption and wastewater discharge throughout the value chain.
BIER acknowledges that several organizations, most notably the Water Footprint Network and the International Organization for Standardization, are developing detailed methodologies and technical guidance on water accounting and footprinting. Several BIER member companies have developed product water footprints using these methodologies and/or are actively participating in development processes.
In 2010, BIER formed a working group to evaluate and address the increasing global efforts to develop water methodologies, particularly as they apply to the beverage sector. The initial output of this work is this Practical Perspective on Water Accounting in the Beverage Sector, which is intended to be complementary to existing methodologies and technical guidance. The Sector Perspective is intended to be an aid to guide beverage companies in the application of existing and developing methodologies and tools, with a specific focus on application within the beverage sector. BIER members are also developing a companion document that discusses the application of methodologies to identify and prioritize water risks from a business perspective.
BIER has strived for transparency with key stakeholders throughout development of the Sector Perspective, including a formal peer review process in May 2011. The public release of this document further supports BIER’s mission of establishing a common framework for leadership in the realm of water stewardship.
