New Environmental Insights for the Beverage Sector: Industry Collaboration with The Nature Conservancy on Agriculture and Water Impacts
The Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER), in its mission to advance environmental sustainability across the beverage sector, engaged the expertise of The Nature Conservancy (TNC), a leading global conservation organization, for the development and publication of a technical white paper to assess beverage sector impacts on agrarian and fresh water resources throughout the supply chain.
The recently published paper, entitled “Impacts and Dependencies of the Beverage Sector on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services: An Introduction”, provides detailed perspective on the relationship between the beverage sector and the environment, including raw materials, production facility, transportation, sale and consumption aspects. The research also identifies resources, tools and methods for the beverage sector to lead the way toward greater environmental awareness and ecological impact reduction.
“Private sector awareness and participation are critical to our conservation efforts,” says Kari Vigerstol, a Senior Hydrologist at The Nature Conservancy. “We apply our science and experience to help businesses make better decisions, understand the value of nature, and ultimately protect it. Through increased biodiversity and ecosystem knowledge, the beverage sector has the opportunity to go beyond the status quo to help shape new, environmentally sustainable and profitable corporate strategies.”
“We recognize the important role the beverage sector can play in protecting biodiversity and ecosystems,” says Tod Christenson, BIER Director. “We hope this paper sparks conversation and prompts action among all stakeholders to better understand environmental impacts and opportunities to mitigate these impacts. It’s through this understanding that we can advance environmental sustainability of the sector and contribute to the conservation and preservation of valuable natural resources.”
