A Practical Perspective on Water Footprinting Undergoing Review By Select External Stakeholders
Several organizations are developing detailed water footprinting methodologies and technical perspectives. In 2010, BIER formed a working group to evaluate and address the increasing global efforts to develop water footprinting methodologies, particularly as they apply to the beverage sector.
A Practical Perspective on Water Footprinting in the Beverage Sector has been created by BIER members to guide beverage companies in the application of existing and developing water footprintingdocuments. It provides clarification and consistency in the quantification of a beverage water footprint and introduces a screening methodology to identify and prioritize water impacts from a business perspective.
This document is intended to be complementary to other water footprinting methodologies, not competing. BIER is currently seeking review and comment from selected external stakeholders as the Sector Perspective is finalized. The draft document was distributed to the International Organization for Standardization, The Nature Conservancy, Pacific Institute, UNEP/SETAC, Water Footprint Network, World Business Council for Sustainable Development and World Wildlife Fund.
Feedback and comments received will be discussed in May 2011 at the semi-annual BIER meeting in Cognac, France. Final publication of the Sector Perspective is expected later in 2011.
