BIER ISSUES SELECT RESULTS OF 2010 WATER USE BENCHMARKING STUDY
Clean, high-quality water is the essential ingredient for all beverage products. Accordingly, beverage companies continually focus on water use avoidance and conservation to ensure this resource is managed responsibly.
Since 2007, BIER has completed an annual quantitative benchmark to evaluate water use and efficiency in the beverage industry. BIER undertakes this annual benchmarking study to more clearly understand water use drivers and impacts and to demonstrate improvement as an industry sector in water stewardship efforts. Members utilize the benchmark data both internally and externally to support their individual water conservation programs.
After completion of its benchmarking study in 2010, BIER membership determined the benchmarking process was sufficiently mature and robust to share results with external stakeholders. Water Use Benchmarking in the Beverage Industry: Trends and Observations, 2010 shares some of the water use and performance information collected as part of BIER's most recent study, covering performance from 2007 to 2009. Further, some of the best practices employed to drive water use avoidance and efficiency are summarized.
This first publication is the result of detailed analyses and a thorough review by our members to ensure confidence in the presented findings. BIER plans to begin its fifth annual benchmarking study in June 2011.
