Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable Announces American Beverage Association as Trade Partner

February 24, 2014 | BIER

The Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER) announced today its formalized trade partner agreement with the American Beverage Association (ABA), a trade organization that represents America’s non-alcoholic beverage industry, including regular and diet soft drinks, bottled water and water beverages, 100 percent juice and juice drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks and ready-to-drink teas.

“BIER recognizes the important role that trade groups play in advocacy and informing public policy,” says Tod Christenson, BIER Director. “We are excited to have ABA as a trade partner and look forward to building an integrated relationship that leverages the diverse category perspectives of their membership, helps to create bridges to key external stakeholders and strengthens the voice of the beverage industry on matters of environmental sustainability.”

“Ours is an industry that believes in working together in pursuit of meaningful solutions to our nation’s environmental challenges, so we are proud to collaborate with BIER on doing more to achieve this shared goal.” said Susan Neely, American Beverage Association president and CEO. “From our member companies’ efforts to bring their products to market using 100 percent recyclable packaging to our support of comprehensive recycling programs, our industry is constantly searching for ways to further minimize its environmental impact, and our partnership with BIER will provide us even more opportunity to innovate in the area of environmental sustainability.”

“One specific dimension that presents tremendous opportunity for collaboration is around our efforts to advance beverage container recycling. ABA has maintained well vetted recycling data that will serve to supplement and validate our understanding of current recycling trends and best courses for action”, concludes Christenson.

Recently published BIER work includes sector guidance to establish a common methodology for estimation, tracking and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and a quantitative benchmarking study that examines water and energy use drivers and impacts across more than 1,700 beverage production facilities.
