Internal Carbon Pricing
Because internal carbon pricing can help companies achieve a number of objectives, including assessing investment opportunities, preparing for regulations, achieving greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets, and climate scenario analysis, the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER) has developed the Internal Carbon Pricing – An Implementation Guide For Beverage Companies, to better understand how Internal Carbon Pricing (ICP) can be a useful tool in a company’s decarbonization journey.

BIER members believe that the world will progressively seek to move towards low-carbon economies and markets throughout the world. Companies that embrace decarbonization across their operations will benefit by leading innovation, reducing regulatory uncertainties, strengthening investor confidence and credibility, and improving profitability and competitiveness. The ICP is a tool used to reflect the social, environmental, and economic costs of climate change on financial decisions as the tool assigns an actual or shadow cost to greenhouse gas emissions to highlight carbon-intensive activities and incentivize decisions aligned with emissions reductions.

The guide addresses foundational components, including:

  • What is Internal Carbon Pricing
  • Industry Adoption of Internal Carbon Pricing
  • Why Internal Carbon is helpful
  • Is Internal Carbon Pricing right for your organization
  • How to Implement Internal Carbon Pricing

“Internal carbon pricing can be useful in integrating greenhouse gas emissions and climate risk into business decision making processes once a company has measured its GHG footprint, set targets aligned with science, and allocated accountability for emission reductions to its business units. Additionally, ICP has important uses beyond GHG emissions reduction and can be useful for financializing climate risk, engaging employees, and funding carbon reduction initiatives.” Daniel Pierce, Executive Director, BIER

As beverage companies continue their commitments to climate action, they can continue to take a holistic and embedded approach by creating clear governance and accountability for greenhouse gas emissions throughout the organization. The Internal Carbon Pricing – An Implementation Guide For Beverage Companies is a tool to assist on the decarbonization journey.
