Sustainable Development Goals

Supporting the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals

Sustainable Development Goals in the Beverage IndustryIn September 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals to build off of the Millennium Development Goals and achieve an international commitment to economic, social, and environmental sustainable development by 2030. Since then, over 3,800 multi-stakeholder partnerships and voluntary commitments have been registered by stakeholders devoted to supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Individual member companies of the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER) have pledged their commitment to the SDGs, and some have designed formal approaches to implement and support the SDGs on a more formal scale.

Collectively as BIER, our work streams support the following sustainable development goals: SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

SDG 6 in the Beverage Industry

Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

Water stewardship is the foundation for BIER, and our members work collectively to promote the sustainable use and protection of water through best practice sharing, tool development, and methodologies for assessing both the technical and business aspects of water within their operations.

Sustainable Development Goals

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

Through benchmarking and best practice sharing around energy accounting, key performance indicators, and transparency, BIER members collectively contribute to improving energy efficiency across beverage sector operations and the broader value chain.

Sustainable Food and Beverage

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

In 2015, BIER released a Joint Commitment on Climate Change to express public support of an international framework of national greenhouse gas reduction targets and commitments to invest in adaption. BIER members collaborate to ensure compliance and promote climate action through common guidance, reporting, and best practice sharing within the beverage sector.

The Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER) is a technical coalition of leading global beverage companies working together to advance environmental sustainability within the beverage sector. Formed in 2006, BIER is a common voice across the beverage sector, speaking to influence global standards on environmental sustainability aspects most relevant to the sector, affect change both up and down the supply chain and share best practices that raise the bar for environmental performance of the industry. By doing so, BIER is able to monitor data and trends, engage with key stakeholders, develop best practices, and guide a course of action for the future.
