Future Scenario Planning

Sustainability in the Beverage Industry 2025: What are the Potential Scenarios?

The Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER) recently completed a future scenarios thinking and planning exercise related to environmental sustainability in 2025. Through this exercise, BIER identified two primary aspects that will, at their core, define the future state of sustainability within the beverage sector: resource availability and governance strength.

Because of the high potential value to others in the beverage sector, as well as companies outside the sector, we are pleased to share this work. Through these future scenarios, we hope that you may be able to test your level of preparedness and consider potential sustainability opportunities or challenges that may emerge. The scenarios are meant to be used as a backdrop for business and sustainability discussions, and represent plausible futures that could have a profound impact on your strategies and actions. Please download the free future planning toolkit if you want to know more about how industry actions have real impacts.

Watch the short video below for an explanation of how these scenarios work and why they should be an important part of your business considerations.

This framework also allows you to consider potential, plausible circumstances that do not exist today, but may emerge in the future–circumstances that could have a profound effect on the success and effectiveness of your current strategies.

FUTURE IN SUSTAINABILITY SCENARIOS

Why Were The Scenarios Created?

In order to help beverage companies better plan for a future in sustainability, the scenarios framework enables you to consider potential or emerging events and pattern them in a way that allows systematic evaluation and better identification and management of future risk.

This framework also allows you to consider potential, plausible circumstances that do not exist today, but may emerge in the future–circumstances that could have a profound effect on the success and effectiveness of your current strategies. This planning process could then better direct your intelligence gathering, providing direction on key watch-points and potential significant points of impact to your resources, and to your overall business.

We have distilled this framework for you in an easy-to-use toolkit, containing more detailed information about each of the scenarios and executive level information to facilitate team planning processes and strategy formulation for your business.

How Is The Toolkit Used?

Gather with leadership in your organization to:

  • Brainstorm impacts of each scenario;
  • Identify common themes that are relevant to your organization; and
  • Discuss how you can better prepare and position your company for the future

How Will The Toolkit Benefit My Organization?

  • Gives your company greater insight and sensitivity to the unfolding nature of the future;
  • Facilitates contingency thinking and planning;
  • Helps direct and focus attention to those trends or aspects that are most germane to your business strategies and actions;
  • Prevents surprises and blind spots; and
  • Serves as a simple tool (and set of discussions) to use before you leap into business decisions.
